Remarking on DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang’s insistence that the selection of constitutional law expert Aziz Bari for a Perak state seat was not to put a party man in place to become MB, Ti said there was nothing to prevent DAP from claiming the spot.
Ti also noted this was a continuation of DAP’s strategy to yield figurehead positions despite being entitled to these by virtue of its own numerical superiority, such as when Lim yielded the federal Opposition leader’s seat to PKR’s Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail despite his party being the best represented in Parliament.
“From this, we can obviously note that the DAP is afraid of something. Why should a political party that aspires for racial equality and a Malaysian Malaysia so quickly give up its political right to claim the MB’s position?
“After all, it is constitutionally, politically and democratically correct. One wonders what happened to DAP’s promise to the non-Malays, especially the Chinese of a more equal playing field?” Ti said in a statement.
Ti also asked his political rival if it will similarly reject the chance for a party leader to be prime minister if this were possible, reminding DAP of the late Karpal Singh’s ambition to see a non-Malay one day fill the position.
He accused DAP of abandoning its own principles for an equal playing field without racial considerations, and asked if the Opposition party now accepted the need for Malay political supremacy.
The MCA publicity spokesman concluded by saying that this was the latest example of how DAP was willing to compromise its principles for political gain.
“If the DAP can so quickly neglect and overlook all they have preached so far, just think how much more quicker they would be to turn their backs on the rakyat,” Ti said.
Lim confirmed that Aziz will contest in Perak, but denied that the latter was being fielded so that his party may lay claim to the Perak MB’s spot in the event Pakatan Harapan wins the state during the general election.
Prior to that, DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke reprimanded incumbent Tebing Tinggi representative Ong Boon Piow for publicly disclosing the move, and said the latter would be disciplined.
