For anyone who believes classical music and comedy simply does not mix, the popular duo will gladly debunk that notion with their uniquely hilarious performing style which they describe as “Mozart meets Monty Python.”

Tonight and tomorrow, Igudesman & Joo are back in Malaysia for the third time at Dewan Filhamonik Petronas – their Malaysian debut was with Latvian classical violinist Gidon Kremer in 2009 and they returned in 2014 for a collaboration with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

The duo returns this time around with UpBeat, an orchestral show that will take audiences on a wacky musical ride from Ravel to rock.

For the uninitiated, Russian violinist Aleksey Igudesman and English-born pianist of South Korean descent Hyung-ki Joo first burst into the music scene in 2004 with their show A Little Nightmare Music, a hilarious take on Mozart’s beloved Eine kleine Nachtmusik.

The classically trained musicians – who met at the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School – have performed in both concert halls and stadiums, sharing the stage with the likes of Joshua Bell, Janine Jansen, the Bee Gees’ Robin Gibb, Tears For Fears and Simply Red.

They have also teamed up with Academy Award nominee John Malkovich and late James Bond star Sir Roger Moore for Unicef.

Influenced by musicians who had a great sense of humour such as Victor Borge, Dudley Moore and Glenn Gould, Igudesman and Joo aim to bring people closer to classical music and have carved a niche in mixing music, comedy and theatre.

Clips and excerpts of the duo’s acclaimed BIG Nightmare Music, And Now Mozart, Play It Again and Scary Concert shows have been watched over 40 million times on YouTube.

Catch Igudesman & Joo: UpBeat tonight and tomorrow, 8.30pm at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, KLCC. Tickets are priced at RM60, RM90, RM120 and RM150. Call 03-2331 7007 or visit to purchase.
