KUALA LUMPUR: The people of Batu 11 Cheras, which falls under the Balakong constituency, are confident that Pakatan Harapan's (PH) candidate Wong Siew Ki will continue the legacy of the previous DAP assemblyman, the late Eddie Ng Tien Chee.
Speaking after a press conference at Jalan Pekan, Kampung Baru Balakong, Lim Chin Yuan, 58, village head of Batu 11 Cheras, said the late Ng was adored and deeply missed by residents.
"He made sure that whatever we asked were fulfilled, we were very satisfied with him as he also helped us solve pressing matters in the area," said Lim.
According to Lim, Ng had moved quickly to address issues around Balakong and had often delivered good news to the people.
"Eddie had done a lot of things for the residents, especially in addressing and placing street lights in back lanes and rural parts of Batu 11 as well as making sure potholes are quickly patched up for the safety of pedestrians and motorists," he added.
"We are confident and do hope that the new candidate (Wong) after winning, will continue to fight the good fight for the people," Lim said.
Wong started her campaigning at 8am today by handing out national flags to people in Kampung Baru Balakong.
Wong also visited Sungai Balak, Kampung Baru Balakong to oversee the progress of the river upgrading works which were initially expected to be delayed for a month, but the delay is now expected to be only for two weeks.
"The late Eddie had already started this (upgrading of Sungai Balak) and we have to make sure the deadline of completion which is next January is met," said Wong.
Wong, a former Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) councillor, will be facing MCA Serdang division committee member Tan Chee Teong in the Balakong by-election on Sept 8.
The Election Commission had set nomination day for the Balakong by-election on Aug 18, and polling day on Sept 8.
The Balakong state seat fell vacant after Ng died in a traffic accident on July 20.
During GE14, Ng had retained his seat by beating Barisan Nasional candidate Lim Chin Wah and PAS candidate Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali when he obtained 41,768 votes.
