Negotiate with SPAD, not protest, some taxi drivers urge

A massive street protest being planned by taxi drivers against Uber on Nov 18 has not gone down well with some of them.

The protest, organised by the Klang Taxi Drivers Joint Action Committee, is set to take place at Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok.

Gabungan Persatuan Teksi Malaysia (GBTM), a coalition of taxi drivers associations, said any unhappiness against Uber, and similar automated smartphone taxi booking system, should be settled through negotiations with the Land Public Transport Commission (Spad).

A GBTM spokesman, Norfaiza Abdul Ghani, said the street protest would further tarnish the reputation of taxi drivers and would do more harm than good.

He urged all taxi drivers to have faith in their respective associations to settle the matter without taking to the streets.
