Man suspected of taking bets on World Cup held

SIBU: A 62-year-old man has been picked up from a house in Taman Rajang here at 8pm last night for suspected involvement in 2018 World Cup football betting.

A raid by a Sibu CID team also recovered several betting slips from the man who was also taking bets for an illegal four digit syndicate.

Sarawak CID chief SAC Dennis Leong in a statement here said a mobile phone and RM545 in cash were also seized in the raid.

"Sarawak CID has launched anti-football gambling operations since last Sunday. If international and local bookies were not contained during the World Cup, it may result in match-fixing," he said.

The man was being investigated under the Betting Act 1953 and the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
