The Audi quattros on the scenic route to Port Dickson.KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — Flashback to the 1980s: The Audi quattro enters the World Rally Championship (WRC), and in its first ever rally outing, it overtook a Lancia Stratos (then the world's fastest production rally car) ten minutes into the first stage in snowy conditions despite starting a minute behind the Stratos. Hannu Mikkola, the 'Flying Finn' as he was later called, did not win the rally due to an accident, but what he did with the quattro shook the rally world, and thus started the trend for WRC cars to go all-wheel drive. The rest is history, as far as quattro, and all-wheel drive in WRC cars are concerned.
Back to the 21st century, and Audi brings the quattro Experience to Malaysia through Euromobil Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of DRB-HICOM Berhad (“DRB-HICOM”) as part of an overall global brand message to promote quattro, Audi’s leading all-wheel drive system. In conjunction with the “Malaysia. Land of quattro®” campaign, four quattro® driving experience events are organised by the importer.
The first instalment was held for the Malaysian motoring media over the weekend (November 1) with two subsequent private events and one public event to be held over the next coming weeks. In the first media event, twenty journalists were taken on a scenic drive, starting from Euromobil’s latest “Home of quattro,” Audi Damansara to Port Dickson for lunch before heading back, with a stop-over at the Sepang International Circuit for additional on-road and off-road experiential activities, to put the all-wheel drive system to the test.
Moving with ease over slippery surfaces. Euromobil had lined up ten Audi quattro models for the event made up of sedan cars – the newly launched Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TFSI, Audi A6 3.0 TFSI, Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TFSI® and the flagship Audi A8 3.0 TFS. Complementing the range were the SUV models, namely the Audi Q3 2.0 TFSI, Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI and the Audi Q7 3.0 TFSI. The driving route covers a total distance of 230 kilometres on a variety of route profiles with long straights on the highway, twisting trunk and B-roads to truly experience the technological leadership of quattro over conventional drive systems.
During the drive, participants can experience the advantage of quattro in terms of improved traction and grip, whilst the sporty drive system enables dynamic cornering.
The on-road exercises held at Sepang International Circuit simulated more demanding driving situations to test the handling and performance of the quattro drive system. These included simulations of emergency situations whereby participants were given the opportunity to test accident avoidance manoeuvres in wet and slippery road conditions in the Audi sedans. The permanent all-wheel drive system performed with impressive driving dynamics coupled with precise handling qualities thanks to the combination of high traction and lateral stability.
The Audi quattro Q3 is not deterred by mud nor water. In the off-road exercises exclusive to the SUVs due to their higher ground clearance, participants were given the opportunity to put the Audi SUVs to even more rigorous tests. Torrential downpours due to the current wet monsoon season made the grounds extremely slippery, but the quattro all-wheel drive system managed to tackle the adverse weather conditions at ease, even with on-road tyres.
Audi quattro® is one of the key pillars of the Audi brand. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive makes it possible to directly experience Vorsprung durch Technik as it represents driving safety and sportiness, technical competence and a dynamic attitude that doesn’t let even adverse road conditions hold it back.
