KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 3, 2013): Puteri Umno speakers chosen to speak at the Umno General Asembly are urged to voice the woes, views and demands of the community in their debates.
This was the call made by newly elected Puteri Umno head Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (pix) to the 13 speakers selected by the movement, including those who would be speaking for the first time, to debate on issues pertaining to politics, the economy, religion, education and the policy speech tomorrow.
"I hope they (the speakers) will be the bridge between the party and the community out there. For those who will be speaking for the first time, don't be afraid," she told Bernama, adding that this would be the first time that a speaker representing the undergraduates was being invited to take part in the debate.
For a better presentation, Mas Ermieyati, who is also the Member of Parliament for Masjid Tanah, said besides doing their "homework", the speakers could also insert elements of humour in their speeches so that the delegates would not be bored.
"It does not mean that they should become comediennes on stage, a normal presentation inserted with humour can enliven the atmosphere besides giving an impact to the delegates comprising young people," she said.
She said the speakers were also given the freedom to bring up relevant issues in line with the concept of openness practiced by Umno. Asked on her own preparation, Mas Ermieyati who would be leading Puteri Umno after winning the movement's election in October said : "I held discussions with the party leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and lecturers to obtain inputs and information so that my speech will have an impact."
She said that she and the movement's leadership must prove to the delegates that they had not made a wrong choice during the Puteri Umno election in October.
"We took the helm of Puteri Umno less than two months ago but I notice that the elected Exco members have shown their diligence and commitment...I believe they are capable of giving the best ideas to assist Umno."
The Puteri Umno general assembly will be opened simultaneously with those of the Youth and Wanita assemblies tonight by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the Putra World Trade Centre, here.
Mas Ermieyati said a total of 902 delegates were chosen to attend the Puteri Umno assembly this time with about 3,000 other Puteri members expected to be present as observers.
On the perception voiced by certain quarters that Puteri Umno represented an elite and exclusive group, Mas Ermieyati said she did not refute such a perception and instead described it as a challenge that must be tackled in efforts to attract more members in preparation for the 14th general election (GE14).
"No matter what the situation may be, we must be able to adept ourselves. I am a village or 'kampung' girl myself but I try to join all the groups," she said.
