SHAH ALAM (Nov 24, 2013): In a move to make its presence felt in East Malaysia, PKR approved an amendment to its constitution today which will see the party allocating one vice-president post for Sabah and Sarawak.

"This is necessary as our objective is to uphold the Federation of Malaysia Agreement 1963," said PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli.

Rafizi said there is currently no automatic representation for Sabah and Sarawak in the central committee although Bakalalan assemblyman Baru Bian is a member of the central committee.

A permanent Bornean vice-president in the party will also mean that more could be elected or appointed.

Other amendments to the party's constitution are expected to decentralise the party's leadership and see more participation from its wings and empower grassroots leadership.

First among the amendments is where whole clauses regarding the Youth and Wanita wings were removed and replaced by only two sub-clauses each, where both wings were granted full autonomy.

Rafizi said the move is to empower the Youth and Wanita wings as they will be running things their way instead of sticking to the rules in the party's constitution.

The amendments were unanimously passed by 886 central delegates at the party's Extraordinary National Congress today.

Election rules were also amended to allow simultaneous direct elections to be held, which Rafizi said will significantly reduce the amount of time and resources spent on holding separate divisional and national elections.

It will also prevent political opponents from nit-picking on PKR's electoral process.

He also said the new constitution will take effect after the party's polls, which is expected to take place in March, to show the results of the reforms.

The party president's term in office will also be limited to three terms starting from 2010, which means current president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would have two more terms to serve before she has to step down.

The deputy president will also immediately succeed if the presidential post is vacated for any reason.
