Nazri defends PM’s US visit, castigates Mahathir

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz says when Najib visited China, he was criticised for doing business with one nation only but now that Najib is also doing business with the US, he is again being criticised.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz today defended the prime minister’s visit to the United States, saying the latter was only following “advice” given by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“The last time when Datuk Seri Najib Razak went to China, they condemned him for doing business with only one country, saying that it is dangerous.

“So it can be said that Najib did listen to what Mahathir had said,” he told reporters during a press conference at the National Museum.

Now, he said, Najib had gone to the US to do business with them and that was also wrong for Mahathir and his supporters.

After Najib’s China visit, former prime minister Mahathir said Najib was promoting Chinese investment in the country at the expense of local companies.

After Najib’s US visit, the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and PPBM claimed that feedback on the ground pointed to the public being “sore” over what had transpired during the White House meeting on Sept 12.

“He’s mistaken if he thinks the public feels good about his meeting. People are sore over the fact that this country has no money but is giving money to the US to help them build their infrastructure,” he said.

Nazri supported the prime minister’s move to purchase 25 Boeing 737 jets and eight 787 Dreamliners, with another 25 737s slated for purchase in the near future.

The deal would be worth more than US$10 billion (RM41.9 billion) within five years.

“I have been a minister of tourism and culture for four years, you know how difficult it is to promote Malaysia when there is no Malaysian airline flying all over the world?” asked the Padang Rengas MP.

He said in his tenure as the tourism minister he had seen Malaysia Airlines closing many routes.

He added that he wanted Malaysia Airlines to fly everywhere. “If they fly everywhere, I don’t have to beg airlines from other countries.”

“So, to the prime minister I say: thank you so much, don’t you listen to people like Mahathir. He destroyed Malaysia Airlines, now we have to rebuild it,” Nazri said.
