It is confirmed that late PAS Spiritual Adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat’s son Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz is not a member of Parti Amanah Negara. ― File picKUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 ― Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz is not a registered member of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), the Kelantan chief of the PAS splinter party confirmed.
Datuk Wan Rahim Wan Abdullah sought to douse repeated news reports that the younger son of the late PAS Spiritual Adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat had deserted the conservative Islamist party for Amanah which styles itself a moderate Islamist party.
“I can confirm that Nik Omar has not registered as an Amanah member, so what has been reports by him to the media before this is true,” Wan Rahim was reported as saying by Malay daily Sinar Harian today.
Nik Omar was reported to have denied his membership in Amanah a day after The Malaysian Insider reported an announcement was made to that effect during a New Year’s Day dinner at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre in Selangor.
Wan Rahim added Nik Omar's decision was influenced by the feelings of his mother and who would not be too keen in him to join Amanah.
Nik Omar has been spotted at several Amanah functions since the party was formed last year, and has fuelled rumours his membership was imminent.
His membership in Amanah would inevitably lead to comparisons between him and older brother, Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz who is PAS Youth chief.
