KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian challenge at the World Badminton Championships ended after professional male singles Liew Daren was beaten by a young Japanese star Kento Momota.

Daren was forced to forget his wish to enter the final after Momota showed him the way out in a 37-minute fight in the semi-finals that ended with a 16-21, 5-21 decision at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre, China.

The 31-year-old's performance in today's match was also linked to a right ankle injury suffered in the second set in the quarter-finals against another Japanese player, Tsuneyama Lens, yesterday.

Daren's achievement at the World Championship this season was something he had never achieved with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for 12 years before he left the parent body early in 2016 due to his deteriorating performance.
