PETALING JAYA: In a break with tradition, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V will not confer titles in conjunction with his official birthday celebrations next month.
According to an exclusive news report by an online news portal, this was confirmed by an officer from the Prime Minister's Office.
Another source told the portal that the Agong would only deliver a speech on Sept 9, followed by a congratulatory message from Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The portal reported that the list of title recipients given by the previous Barisan Nasional administration would be reviewed again.
Rais said he heard that this year there would be no awards by the Agong and that there would only be speeches by Sultan Muhammad V and the prime minister.
He congratulated the move and said the practice of presenting tributes to the rulers should not be allowed to continue, including at the state level.
