KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has issued a rallying cry to push for big reforms in the party without delay. He called on Umno members to change in ways they have never imagined before to rebuild the party.
"I call on my comrades who wish to rebuild Umno from the collapse we have seen today, to stand with me as change must begin immediately. We cannot delay any further," he said.
He added that the party must go back to its roots as being a party for all, and not be seen as a party detached from the public, a party for the elite, a party that was arrogant and a party that did not care for integrity.
"I want Umno to go back to be a party for the masses. A party that safeguards the dignity of the Malays and builds prosperity together with other races, a party that is not racist, one that truly fights for all layers of society," he declared in a statement posted on Facebook in conjunction with the 72nd anniversary of Umno.
"We cannot put off (the changes) any longer. Umno's services to religion, race and country are too huge to allow our sacred party to die and disappear forever," he said.
"For sure, this is not the situation I envisioned to celebrate our party's anniversary, but that is the choice of the people and the will of Allah," he added.
The Rembau MP called for painful sacrifices to be made to make Umno great again.
"What we need today are honesty, courage, and painful sacrifices," he said.
