In a statement, Google articulated its stance on removing the 3.5mm jack.
The Pixel 2 still comes with a headphone jack but we have moved to USB-C, a standard that is becoming commonplace in the best phones and laptops of today. Moving to the USB-C audio port with Pixel 2 allows us to provide a better audio and digital experience, as we move towards a bezel-less future.
Interestingly, Google had mocked Apple for its choice to remove the audio jack last year. This year it too is embracing the paradigm, though it also included a dongle with the phone for users who still want to use their old 3.5mm headphones.
Google also included a list of Type-C headphones in its statement, including models that were not released yet but coming soon.
With both Google and Apple declaring the 3.5mm audiojack dead, it's only a matter of time before all the higher-end flagships follow suit. RIP audio jack, we'll miss you.
