GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government and the private sector need to work together as one machinery to help the low-income group, particularly in building more affordable homes.
Penang Yang Dipertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas said the state government should continue to focus on the need of the B40 and M40 income groups especially relating to the cost of living and affordable homes.
He said providing sufficient affordable housing was necessary, including for houses priced at RM42,000 per unit to ensure the goal of one family, one home could be realised.
"In this regard, the private sector also needed to come forward to assist the state government to address the issue and not merely think of profits," he said when opening the 14th Penang state legislative assembly's first sitting of the first term here today.
He said the Pakatan Harapan's victory in retaining the state government, rendering Penang as no longer an opposition state, should be utilised to improve the well-being of the people in the state.
Abdul Rahman said the early recognition of the federal government was tangible when Penang was chosen to be the host of the 2018 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign launch that would be held at the Padang Kota Lama here tomorrow night.
"I hope we are not complacent with the achievements so far and these achievements should not only be continued but have to be further enhanced in the next five years," he said.
He also urged all the elected representatives including from the opposition to work together with the government to improve the lives of the people by ensuring they benefited in terms of economic, social and other opportunities.
